Alexander Claims Another Title

From Caboolture Squash and Fitness

There were over 90 players, 135 matches and only two days, but the Martin Jonkers Motors Caboolture Open reaffirmed its status as a major event on the Australian squash calendar.

With the majority of headline players away on overseas tours, the Caboolture Open took on a new look with the junior stars stepping up to the plate to claim a share of the $5000 prize pool co-sponsored by The Good Guys of Morayfield.

It was Zac Alexander again though who was the one to watch after claiming the national junior title a few weeks earlier.

Alexander proved too strong for fellow finalist Brad Freeme taking out the men's Open final in 3 games.

In other results, Robert Simpson defeated Luke Feeney in the men's premier division, Paul O'Donnell defeated Mark Newton in the 'A' division while Martin Collins and Ken Rachow won the 'B' and 'C' divisions respectively.

In the ladies divisions, Lisa Camilleri proved too strong for Georgie Davis while Emily Barnes defeated Leisl Walker in the ladies 'B' division.

Earlier, Tahlia Rolph defeated Bryannan Head in the Novice round-robin challenge.

But arguably the final of the tournament was the ladies 'A' grade final played out between Allana Davies and Angela Fisher.

Both ladies left it all on court with a marathon effort that resulted in Davies claiming the title in the fifth game with a 10-9 victory.

The ladies divisions proved to be very strong over all with 30 entrants across all grades.

Caboolture Squash was well represented with seven of the 18 finalists being Caboolture locals.

Jon and Nathan Stevenson of Caboolture Squash and Fitness were pleased with the event and thankful for the support from the sponsors.

Nathan, returning from injury and illness finished a commendable fourth in the men's Open division.

The Caboolture Open proved a hit with players with entrants coming from as far as Coffs Harbour and Armidale in northern NSW.
